Injury trouble plagues Cambridge Women in 2-0 loss at Whitby

June 19, 2026

WHITBY, ON – Cambridge United (W) suffered a challenging 2-0 defeat to Whitby FC Women on Friday night at the Telus Dome. In a top of the table matchup, the visitors missed a crucial opportunity to collect three points on the road. Instead, an increasingly difficult and  physical match left Cambridge battered by injuries and looking to reset after a long stint on the road.

Forced into using three different players in goal due to back-to-back injuries, the visitors fought valiantly through mounting tension, but a pair of quick second-half goals sealed their fate on an unfortunate evening in Whitby.

TEAM LINEUPS

Cambridge United Starting XI: Mitchell (GK) (Obelnicki 46’ [S. Morgan 78’]), Richards (Derry 60’), Sauve, Beaumont, Falkenstein, Porteous, Kraja (Chan 82’), G. Morgan (McCall 55’), Abraham, Lariviere, Heyes (C).

First Half

Whitby applied heavy attacking pressure early, testing the Cambridge defensive unit. Dressed in their sky blue kits against Whitby's dark blue home colours, Cambridge's backline initially stood tall under the early pressure as the game’s physicality intensified.

Disaster struck for the visitors right at the interval when starting goalkeeper Shae Mitchell was forced off due to injury. She was substituted at halftime, head coach Neil Wilson bringing on backup keeper Bronya Obelnicki.

Second Half

The second 45 minutes of play proved a challenge for the visiting side. In the 50th minute, Cambridge’s Genevieve Morgan picked up a yellow card, and she was substituted five minutes later for Kay-Lynn McCall.

Whitby broke the deadlock in the 56th minute. Emily Cirone got on the end of a perfectly delivered corner kick to head it past the keeper, putting the home side up 1-0.

Only two minutes later, Whitby struck again. In the 58th minute, Kai Douglas reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box, caught the keeper out of position, and calmly slotted it into the empty net to double Whitby's advantage to 2-0.

Tempers flared as Cambridge fought to get back into the game. Cassidy Derry entered the match and picked up a caution in the 65th minute, followed by midfielder Sami Falkenstein receiving a yellow card in the 72nd.

The match began to slip further away from Cambridge in the 78th minute, when backup keeper Obelnicki was also forced out of the game due to injury. She was replaced on the pitch by outfield player Sophia Morgan. With no remaining goalkeepers on the bench, midfielder Sami Falkenstein bravely took over the responsibilities in goal for the final stretch of the match.

Falkenstein and the remaining backline fought incredibly hard to shut the door for the final 12 minutes plus stoppage time, preventing any further damage. Despite late tactical adjustments that saw Kyra Chan enter the field, Cambridge unfortunately ran out of time to overcome the mountain of adversity, leaving the pitch empty-handed.

They will look to bounce back in their next two games, finally back on home turf at Fountain Street Soccer Complex. The matches are set for Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. and Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
