Cambridge Men secure away point in 0-0 draw at Whitby FC

Whitby, ON – Cambridge United Men’s squad battled to a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Whitby FC on Saturday night at the TELUS Dome. In a highly physical matchup defined by tactical defensive structures and a busy referee, neither side could find the decisive breakthrough, resulting in a shared point on the night.

TEAM

Cambridge United Starting XI: Findlay (GK), Grant (Shaikh 79’), Arango, Amaral, Ciavarro (Monterroso 66’), Elezi (Nibogora 66’), Greenidge (Kohar 90’), Heimbecker (C), Medeiros, Brousseau, Lesic.

Unused Subs: Lopez (GK), Mun, Clamp, Poradzisz, Robertson. 

First Half

The opening 45 minutes set the tone for a gritty, defensive battle. Both backlines remained organized, limiting clean looks at goal on either side. The match began to grow increasingly physical as the midfield space closed down, leading to the game's first booking in the 41st minute when Whitby's Azim Taher received a yellow card. The teams headed into the break deadlocked at 0-0.

Second Half

The physical intensity boiled over in the second half as the referee went to his pocket frequently. Cambridge's Matthew Ciavarro picked up a yellow card in the 59th minute, followed quickly by cautions to Alex Amaral in the 68th minute and Tristan Greenidge in the 71st minute.

Looking for an offensive spark in the stalemated match, Head Coach Jon Morgan made a double tactical substitution in the 66th minute, introducing Kyler Monterroso and Ank Nibogora for Ciavarro and Elezi. Adam Shaikh later entered the pitch in the 79th minute for Matteo Grant to provide fresh legs for the final push.

Whitby also picked up a booking when substitute Michael Mouratidis was yellow-carded in the 80th minute. In the dying minutes, Saab Kohar entered for Greenidge in the 90th minute to lock down the midfield. Despite both sides trading late set-pieces and pressure, the defensive lines held firm to seal the scoreless draw.
