Cambridge Women fall just short in tight matchup with Hamilton United

Hamilton, ON – Cambridge Women dropped a narrow 2-1 decision on the road against Hamilton United on Wednesday night. In their last game of the regular season, both teams pushed hard to secure three crucial points, battling it out at Redeemer University.

Although Cambridge’s Katie Halley opened the scoring and gave the visitors an early lead, Hamilton responded with two unanswered goals to secure the victory.

Cambridge United Starting XI: Mitchell (GK), Sauve, Beaumont, Halley (Richards 61’), Chan (Mann 48’), Difonzo, G. Morgan (Kraja 46’), McCall (Green 67’), Abraham, S. Morgan (Falkenstein 46’), Heyes (C).

Unused Subs: Obelnicki (GK), Fraga.

First Half

Cambridge’s Katie Halley got Cambridge off and running, capitalizing in the 4th minute to give her team the 1-0 lead. 

Hamilton pushed back, their efforts paying off when they were awarded a penalty late in the half. Brynn Jurus stepped up and converted from the spot to send both teams into the half-time break at one goal apiece. 

Second Half

Both head coaches turned to their benches early in the second, Cambridge bringing on Anastasia Kraja and Sami Falkenstein for Genevieve Morgan and Sophia Morgan after the break. Juliette Man would come in to replace Kyra Chan moments later in the 48th minute. 

Disciplinary tension grew as the match continued, Hamilton’s Jurus receiving a yellow in the 58th minute. 

Cambridge’s goalscorer Katie Halley would exit for Shenasia Richards in the 61st minute as the visitors increased the temp in search for the winner.

Hamilton found what would be the eventual winner in the 67th minute from Delila Bedinikovic.

In response, Cambridge head coach Neil Wilson introduced Clara Green for Kay-Lynn McCall. As the remaining minutes ticked by, tensions grew with Hamilton’s assistant coach David Porco as well as Cambridge’s Danielle Sauve receiving cautions. 

The chaotic match ultimately ended in the home side's favour, Hamilton holding on through the final minutes to lock in the 2-1 win.
