Rush Canada eek out win over United Women with late winner

Cambridge, ON – The OPL 2 Women fell 3-2 in a high-scoring, back and forth matchup against Rush Canada on home turf at Fountain Street soccer complex Sunday. 

Cambridge’s Sami Falkenstein would open the match early for the home side, with both teams trading blows with a back-and-forth attack, but a late winner from the visitors would seal the loss for Cambridge.

Cambridge United Starting XI: Mitchell (GK), Sauve, Beaumont (Fraga 79’), Falkenstein, Halley (Richards 61’), Chan (S. Morgan 61’), Difonzo, Owen, Kraja (G. Morgan 61’), Abraham, Heyes (C).

Unused Subs: Oblenicki (GK), McCall, Green, Mann.

First Half

Cambridge could not have asked for a better start on home turf. Three minutes into the match, midfielder Sami Falkenstein capitalized early with a beautiful strike from long range to put the hosts up 1-0 early.

Cambridge's back line and goaltender Shae Mitchell held strong for the opening half, sending the home side into the break with the 1-0 lead. 

Second Half

The second half opened up, with offensive action at both ends. Rush brought in Alexis Hypolite, who would give the visitors the equalizer in the 56th minute to tie the game at 1-1. 

Hypolite would give Rush the lead for the first time, striking home in the 72nd minute to put her side up 2-1. 

In response, Cambridge brought in Shenasia Richards, Sophia Morgan, and Genevieve Morgan for Katie Halley, Kyra Chan, and Anastasia Kraja to revive their front line and push to gain the lead once more. 

The tactical change would prove fruitful almost immediately, with Genevieve Morgan finding the back of the net to level the game at 2-2 in the 75th minute.

Ava Fraga came in for Allison Beaumont in the 79th minute, gaining her first minutes of play after a long stint out due to injury.

Cambridge pushed late for the difference maker, but Rush Canada’s Shiloh Goodwin would net the 90th minute winner to secure the 3-2 result for the visitors.
