Vaughan, ON – Cambridge United’s Women’s OPL2 squad dug deep on Saturday afternoon, securing a hard-fought 2-1 road victory over International FC at ZASC Stadium.
With a short bench, and in humid conditions, the squad battled through to secure the win and a crucial three points.
TEAM
Cambridge United Starting XI: Mitchell (GK), Sauve, Beaumont, Taylor, Halley (S. Morgan 60’), Chan, Difonzo, Owen (Mann 80’), G. Morgan (Kraja 60’), Abraham (Richards 60’), Heyes (C).
First Half
Cambridge Captain Megan Heyes would find the opener for the visiting side, to hand Cambridge a crucial 1-0 lead. Armed with the early advantage, the visitors preserved their one-goal cushion heading into the break.
Second Half
Cambridge wasted no time stamping their authority on the second frame. Just nine minutes after the restart, Kyra Chan found the net in the 54th minute, doubling the lead to 2-0.
Needing fresh legs to lock down the midfield, Cambridge orchestrated a triple substitution in the 60th minute, bringing on Sophia Morgan, Anastasia Kraja, and Shenasia Richards in place of Katie Halley, Genevieve Morgan, and Zoe Abraham. Two minutes later, International FC earned a lifeline after being awarded a penalty kick. Alexa Shwery stepped up and converted in the 62nd minute to pull the scoreline to 2-1.
The closing stretch tested Cambridge's resilience. The physical play reached its peak in the 63rd minute when Cambridge head coach Neil Wilson was booked with a yellow card.
Looking to secure the defensive block, Juliette Mann replaced Molly Owen in the 80th minute. Mann picked up a late yellow card in the 89th minute as United repelled a desperate, late barrage from the hosts to run down the clock and secure the 2-1 victory.
