Cambridge Men overcome local rivals Waterloo in late fashion

Waterloo, ON—It was a local rivalry clash for the Cambridge Men Wednesday night

as they faced off against Waterloo United in what would be a tight game that came

down to the final minutes.

Though the score remained deadlocked at the culmination of the first half,

Cambridge gained the lead early in the second. Waterloo rallied to even the score,

but Cambridge would put it away late in the 83rd minute to secure the win of 2-1.

First Half

The first unfolded as a fierce and evenly contested affair, both teams resolute with

local pride on the line. Neither side was able to break the deadlock and the

scoreboard remained unchanged at 0-0 as the teams headed into the break.

Cambridge's Christian Ferraro received a yellow card in the second minute of

additional time in the first, a reflection of the escalating tension on the pitch and a

portent for the second half of play.

Second Half

Cambridge made a series of substitutions at half; Kaven Thamilventhan in for Marko

Lesic, Luca Romano for Matthew Ciavarro, Landon Paton for Colin Gander, and Jon

Elezi in for Christian FerraroPaton made an immediate impact, putting his side up 1-0 in the 53rd minute.

Waterloo pushed to equalize in the 68th minute, prompting an interesting final 20

minutes of play with three points as well as local bragging rights on the line.

Waterloo committed a series of fouls that earned two players cautions, anticipation

rising both on and off the field as the two opponents fought for the winner with ten

left to go.

Nikolas Antolcic would be the hero for Cambridge, earning the game winner in the

83rd minute for his visiting side. Cambridge walked away from the night securing a

well-earned three points in their rival city.
