Cambridge Women suffer heartbreaking 2-1 defeat against Waterloo
Sunday, June 29th 2025
Cambridge, ON—Cambridge United Women hosted local rivals Waterloo United on a
scorcher of a summer evening for their first meeting since both teams first games of
the season in the opening round of the Women’s League 1 Cup.
Both teams would be fairly evenly matched, the score remaining deadlocked 0-0 at
half. Cambridge would open the scoring half in the second, but would not be able to
hold on, allowing two late goals.
Team
Cambridge United Starting XI: Mitchell, Desouza (Mackie 45’), Blazek, Halley, Bruni,
Owen (McCall 61’), Kraja (Araujo 68’), Di Benedetto (Derry 45’), Lariviere (Harris
57’), Voutour (Hunt 85’), Heyes (Lunshof 90+2’)
Unused subs: Linn, Parker
First Half
Brutally hot conditions would slow the pace of the game, but not the intensity of the
storied rivalry between the two clubs.
Both teams held fast in their tactics, Waterloo doing well to stretch the field and find
their offense in the flanks and the half-spaces and Cambridge matching them,
holding strong with a formidable block and goalkeeping by Shae Mitchell.
Opportunities would arise at both ends, but neither team were able to find the
netting, the score remaining even at 0-0 at half.
Second Half
The latter half of the match began with two substitutions for the home side at half.
Hayley Mackie came in for Sam Desouza and Cassidy Derry entered for Claire Di
Benedetto who had to take leave due to injury.
Cambridge’s Annick Lariviere would come out in the 57th minute for Mya Harris, the
weather conditions calling for fresh legs to close out a match of this intensity.
Megan Voutour, Cambridge’s top goal scorer, broke the deadlock in the 60th minute,
tapping it in off the bounce on a perfect ball towards the back post by Megan Heyes
on a free kick.
Up 1-0 Cambridge introduced fresh legs once again to try and secure the lead,
Kay-Lynn McCall coming in for Molly Owen in the 61st minute.
Sydney Araujo entered the field for Anastasia Kraja in the 68th minute, and the lone
goal scorer Voutour would exit for Cassidy Hunt in the 85th minute.
As time wound down, Waterloo sent everything they had, the pressure mounting on
Cambridge’s back line and goaltender. Continuously numbers up going forward,
Waterloo found their equalizer in the 88th minute, bringing the score level at 1-1.
Unfortunately for Cambridge, extra time granted the visitors the time needed for a
last push forward to get the game winner in the 91st minute. The home team would
bring in Jordan Lunshof for Heyes in the 92nd minute for the extra forward, but it
would not be enough. Two late goals sealed their fate as they fell 2-1 at home.
