Inter Toronto hand Cambridge Men 3-2 loss in close match at Fountain Street

Cambridge, ON – Cambridge United’s Men’s OPL 2 squad suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat against Inter Toronto on home turf. 

Despite a second-half push to come back from two goals down, a late strike from Inter Toronto secured all three points on the night for the visitors.

Cambridge United Starting XI: Findlay (GK), E. Antolcic (Medeiros 65’), Ferraro (Monterroso 46’), Amaral (Alvarado 65’), Ciavarro (Nibogora 85’), Greenidge, Kohar (D’Souza 68’), Heimbecker, Shaikh, N. Antolicic (C), Dell (Lesic 46’). 

Unused Subs: Lopez (GK), Ayala, McKeon.

First Half

Both teams came out aggressive, the physical tone of the match established early with Cambridge’s Saab Kohar picking up a yellow card in the 15th minute of play. 

The visitors found the back of the net first, Eduardo Ramos capturing the game's opener in the 21st minute to take the 1-0 lead. 

Cambridge fought to stay within reach as the half went on, but the visitors' heavy offensive pressure continued, with Tristan Greenidge receiving a booking in the 29th for his defensive efforts. 

Inter Toronto picked up their second of the match in the 44th minute, Aylon Yshai sending the visitors into the locker room with the 2-0 lead. 

Second Half

Looking for a spark, Cambridge head coach Jon Morgan brought in Marko Lesic and Kyler Monterroso for Elliott Dell and Christian Ferraro at the half. 

Momentum began to shift for the hosts as Matthew Ciavarro stepped up to the spot in the 60th minute. Though his initial attempt was stopped, he was able to jump on the rebound to cut the deficit 2-1. 

Morgan continued to make tactical changes as they pushed for the equalizer, bringing Noah Medeiros, Ricardo Alvaraz, and Anthony D’Souza into the pitch.

The equalizer would come from Cambridge captain Nikolas Antolcic in the 69th minute, bringing the match level at 2-2. 

The last 20 minutes of the match proved just as tense as the opening quarter of play. Unfortunately for Cambridge, the night would swing Inter Toronto’s way as Evan Antolcic picked up a yellow card in the 74th minute with the visitors awarded a penalty kick for the challenge.  

Inter Toronto’s Jacob Cabral stepped up and converted the penalty, giving his side the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute.

Cambridge refused to go quietly, throwing everything at Inter Toronto’s defensive line, but the visitors held strong through stoppage time until the final whistle to claim the victory of 3-2.
